Por vs Para

Although por and para both mean for in English, they have clearly defined roles in Spanish. Here are the main uses:

•Para is used as follows:

1. Purpose, meaning in order to: Estudio para mejorar mi español
2. Destination: Estas flores son para ti
3. Deadlines: Estos deberes son para el martes

•Por is used as follows:

1. By: Fue arrestado por la policía / Mandaré esta carta por correo
2. Per: Gano diez euros por hora
3. Through or along: Por las tardes me gusta pasear por el parque / por la costa
4. Cause or reason why, meaning because of, on behalf of or in favour of : No puedo usar el coche por la nieve / A Juan no le gusta jugar, pero siempre lo hace por mí
5. Exchange: Te cambio esta pegatina por la tuya / ¿Cuánto pagaste por tu coche nuevo?
6. Expressions of time: El martes por la tarde / Iré a España por dos semanas

Although this might not mean a lot to some of you, some people find the following distinction really useful: para looks forward and por looks back.
